Partner with us
for high-quality
carbon credits
We offer high-quality carbon credits based on Bio-Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) that help power district heating in Denmark's second-largest city.
Our credits are available through long-term offtake agreement, with delivery starting in 2030 at the latest.
Kredsløb delivers district heating to more than 330,000 people. We also collect and recycle waste for 178,000 households in the Municipality of Aarhus, Denmark. About 63% of collected municipal and commercial waste is recycled or reused at the present time.
We are owned by the Municipality of Aarhus but operate as an independent corporation.
By 2030, we will build and operate one of Denmark’s largest scale Bio-Energy Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) facilities at our district heating plant in Aarhus. Upon completion, this facility will capture 90-95% of CO2 emissions from the waste incineration plant and the biomass plant.
This greatly improves an otherwise hard-to-abate point source, lowering the climate footprint of district heating in the city.
Leveraging
CCS in
district heating
The Danish government is pioneering CCS globally through subsidy schemes for CCS projects.
Since 2022, two CCS tenders (more than half billion euros in total) have been carried out, granting subsidies to BECCS projects of different scales. In October 2024, the Danish Government announced a third tender of almost four billion euros in subsidies for Danish CCS projects.
Denmark holds the potential of becoming an international CO2 Storage Hub, as Denmark’s geological underground is ideal for storing large quantities of CO2, both onshore and offshore.

The positive effects
of negative emissions
Capturing CO2 from a biomass heating plant results in negative emissions, as the biomass is already considered CO2 neutral. In total, the facility offers several benefits to our carbon credit customers.
Energy efficiency
The heat generated by the CCS facility will help provide district heating to Denmark’s second-largest city.
Measurable
CO2 captured and stored using CCS technology can be measured much more accurately when compared to other removal solutions.
Permanent
In CCS projects, the carbon is stored over 1,000 metres below the surface in structures that can retain CO2 for millions of years without leaking. Captured CO2 is monitored and documented to ensure full transparency.
Additionality
CCS-source carbon removals offer a strong argument for additionality, meaning that the removals would not have occurred without the incentives of the revenue from the sales of carbon removal credits.
Considerable in scale
– and in progress
CO2 will be captured using amine capture technology, which is a commercially proven technology at TRL 9.
The carbon capture facility will be built as a retrofit to the existing flue gas extraction facility.
Moreover, all surplus heat from the carbon capture process will be recovered and utilised for district heating supply, thus enhancing the efficiency of both carbon capture as well as the district heating supply, ensuring the lowest possible heating price for our customers.
The project timeline is updated on an ongoing basis.
Certified CDR's relying
on the best of best practice
We offer high quality and additional CDRs which are based on measurable, verifiable processes and a credible, accurate baseline.
The emissions associated with Kredsløb’s CDRs are measurable, verifiable and based on traceable feedstock. The captured carbon will be stored in stable, secure geological formations.
Kredsløb has historical data to establish a credible and accurate baseline. These CDRs are based on pre-existing activities, namely reliable heat supply to a large customer base and waste incineration commitments.
Furthermore, Kredsløb’s CCS project has a strong additionality claim, in that these carbon removals would not occur without revenue from CDR offtake agreements. We are currently reviewing various voluntary carbon standards.
